Perfect Beach Weather

Do you have a favorite time of the year to go to the beach? Personally, I think the perfect beach weather is the day when you can wear jeans and a flannel with the sun shining on you and the wind blowing your hair everywhere. But not too intensely.

I've been blessed with the privileged to go to Rosarito twice this past week. Which has been a really long week, yet also a short one. We finished painting the outside hallway of the dorms! Painting the outside of the dorms is actually a lot harder of a job than anyone would think it is (unless of course you are a professional painter, in which case it would be perfectly apparent to you how difficult painting stucco that goes two and a half stories up goes.)

I've been reading my way through Judges lately, and aside from that, am not really sure what else is new. We had Martha Keese (Brandon Buser's Wife's Sister) come down and visit for a couple days last weekend, which was a blast. We also were hosts to Lakeside church from the Sacramento area. It was such a great time of fellowship and learning and meeting new people who were just as impacted by their trip here as I was.

Check out http://www.godsome.org for some great stuff that was a result of a trip down here. They're a one for one company (sort of like Tom's Shoes) and it's neat, all the stuff that they're doing for the Christian Community. (they have facebook too!)

So yeah. Have a great week and I hope that No Shave November is going well for you!

No Shave November

Happy November First!

These past two weeks have been crazy. From the 15th to the 23rd I had the privileged of living with a national family. I was blessed with an incredible family and had a great time hanging out with them for the week.

The morning of the 23rd we had two day groups and a couple former staff came down to lead builds so that all of us current interns could have the day off. Since I was heading back to the dorms anyways I took a quick break from my travels to sing a couple songs with the groups and listen to Eddie's message for the morning. After helping everyone get loaded and on their way I headed to San Diego for a weekend with my sister and her family. It was a blast! I got to go trick-or-treating in LegoLand and also spend a day there and in SeaWorld. Lifelong dream of seeing a Dolphin and whale show is now fulfilled.

Tuesday brought about a gradual slip back into the norm. MollyFernando (MollyJo) and I spent the day in San Diego picking up supplies and doing homework at Starbucks. Wednesday we as a staff were allowed to go up to Claremont Emmanuael Baptist Church for an evening of worship, fellowship, food and hearing Brooks Buser speak for the missions conference. This was followed by Friday being able to go to the Women's Night of the missions conference and hear Rachel and Nina Buser speak about their lives with the Yembi Yembi and Biem peoples. It was incredible to get to talk with these women who we hear so much about at Caravan and yet never get to just sit down and talk with.

And for those of you who were wondering, I FINALLY WENT ON MY FIRST CEMENT POUR!!!
Friday we went as a group with Spectrum to help them pour because they had 3 floors to do. Saturday we headed out to Tribu by La Gloria to pour a floor for their new showerhouse. I love pouring cement. It's the type of work and soreness that makes you feel awesome. Which was a blast. It was super fun to get to work as a staff and joke around and still get stuff done.

As far as everything else goes, listen to the words of the song "Where You Go I Go" by Jesus Culture (Kim Walker).

Though the World seems to forget
We will not forget
Who you are and what you've done for us.

It's just an incredible song about following the will of God and the example of Jesus.
John 17: 20-21 points out the fact that Jesus prayed for US and our relationship with God and the example that we set for the rest of the world. It was His prayer that we live lives that are an example, so I encourage you to work on that throughout your week this week.

God bless and stay safe! (and enjoy No Shave November!!!)

Una Grande Aventura

Hoy, yo tenir una grande aventura.

Today, I had a large adventure. Holy smokes. I don't even know where to begin. No. Wait. That's a lie...

This week (this past Friday to this coming Saturday) I get the opportunity to live with a Mexican Family. I'm living with Pastor Jose and his family. I have 3 sisters, Citlali, Quetzali and Karina. My first night we had pizza for dinner and I learned a couple new games (nieces and nephews, watch out!) Saturday we had a busy day including but not limited to: a basketball game that we missed, a soccer game, shopping, a nap, youth group, a birthday party and staying up late. Sunday was crazy because it was my sister Quetzali's birthday party (she just turned 14) and since my father is the pastor, we got to church early. Oh, and everyone else on staff met and moved in with their Mexican families. Hope everyone is having a blast and learning a lot of Spanish!

Which brings us to today: I didn't have work today, but my sisters all had school and both of my parents had work (they're teachers.) So I got the privilege of waking up whenever I wanted and hanging out with a lady from the church (Paty.) She made me breakfast and we had a great conversation. She's in Seminary to become a Pastor of Music. Then another lady from the church came and I got to spend the day with her. Which began the insanity- in a good way.

Maggi sells school uniforms. Three times a week she goes to a Prepa in Tecate and sells the uniforms. So today involved going to Tecate. But first we took Paty to her house off of Casablancas. Then we went to Maggi's house and hung out there for a little bit while she made her son (Israel-17) breakfast and I watched Spongebob Squarepants and Penguins in Spanish. Then we dropped Israel off at his Abuela's and stopped at D'Volada- and they got my order wrong and I wound up with coffee instead of tea. Lame, but it was needed in the end.

After that, we went to the house of a family from the church where Maggi gets the uniforms. The daughter (Dulce-18) is super neat and I met her on Saturday night at Youth Group, so it was nice to get to talk to her again. We kicked it there for a little bit and then Hermano Julio (Dulce's dad) came and we headed out to Tecate.

A Tecate: We stopped for Birria. Bam dude. Birria. In a cup. The best. Yeah. After we ate the birria, Maggi and I headed to the school with the husband of one of the ladies from the birria stand-I think... And we went to the school and sold uniforms for a couple hours. After, the principal from the school took us to the McDonalds, where I bought a kids meal solo for the Transformers toy.

We then met up with Julio and headed to the Mexican equivilent of GreyHound because the car broke down (hence the multiple different cars...) and we took the Greyhound back to Tijuana. When we first got on the bus te driver was playing "Waka Waka". Bam yeah!

We arrived in Tijuana tired, weary and ready to be home, but that wasn't the end of the adventure. The bus dropped us off about a half mile from where it was supposed to, so we got to lug all the uniforms down the hill to where Julio's wife awaited us with a car. We then went back to their house and I got to observe. Which was crazy. But they have their own honey farm.

And now I am finally home and have eaten dinner and am watching tv with my sisters. Phineas and Ferb and Sonny with a Chance. Yay! Have a great week!

Oh! And I get to go to San Diego con mi familia Americana in 5 dias!!!!

Dios se Bendiga!

Fall Update #1

Not that I'm going to number all my fall updates... It's just 7 in the morning.

So for those of you who have realized that I completely space that I have a blog and then remember on a random week day in which I cannot do anything about it, I apologize. These past four and a half weeks since I left Portland have been incredible. Here''s the quick overview (because I need to do laundry...)

Week one: SoCal
When I left Portland I flew down to Burbank and met up with Jessica, a fellow intern here at Caravan. I spent 5 days at her house in Saugus (Santa Clarita) hanging out with her and her sisters and going to the MyGen conference. It was a blast. If you have time and are between my age and I'd say late 20s I would suggest reading My Generation by Josh Riebock. Here's the website: http://www.joshriebock.com/
On that Saturday, Jessica, Rebecca (her sister), Justin (Former Baja Bible School Staff) and I all headed down, out, over, wherever it is that Irwindale is and went to a NASCAR race. Yup. That's right. A NASCAR race. Much more fun when you actually know someone racing, and when you get to watch it with people who all know what''s going on. After the race I went to the Murphy's house and spent a brilliant couple of days working on the racecar and hanging out in the AV.

Week Two-Now: Back to Mexico
Tuesday the 14th found me in a car on the way to Escondido via Saugus. Every Tuesday I take a class called Perspectives on the World Christian Movement at Calvary Chapel. It's so incredible. Aside from that has pretty much been day groups from San Diego on Saturdays (I got to build with North Park again! Yay!) and working around the dorms. We've painted the front of the building (it's now blue) and built la new guard shack and sanded the deck because you couldn't walk on it without getting slivers.

Oh! And we just got back from a 3 day trip to San Quintin in Southern Baja. We built a house for Ramon and Vanessa, a missionary family with New Tribes. I got to meet a lot of different NT affiliated people, and even a couple from Oregon who went to Multnomah! It was an adventure that included over ten hours in a truck, ridiculous traffic through "mountains" and some great conversations.

So yeah, that's pretty much it for now. This coming week includes a week long group from Arizona, and on Friday I move in with a Mexican family. So updates on that when I can! Love you all and thank you for your prayers!

And so it Ends...

Well, this is it. The end of a summer. The end of a season. Over the past 3 weeks there have been some rough goodbyes, and some even tougher ''see-you-later''s. In twelve hours I will be on the plane back to Portland, OR.

On top of that, there's also the realization that I've stunk at keeping this updated. The summer has been SO crazy insane busy that when I DO have a moment to sit down at the computer someone either is in line after me or I just hop on Facebook for a hot second and then am off the computer. I promise to update more this fall when it's a LITTLE [but not really] slower pace.

So here's the best way I can think of to sum up the summer, with some stories to come later.

Things I learned this summer [with additions and revisions to come]:

*When lighting off an M1000, be ready to run
-And lighting it in the water is a fail.

*Crying when there's a boy in charge will most likely get you out of the situation

*3 months without secular music can sometimes be fun. You live life with epic instrumentals
and great conversation.

*How to build a house.

*Driving at night in Mexico is a TAD bit scary.

*Don't ever leave your wallet in an unlocked truck (even when you're at a seemingly safe place)

*Write letters. Keep in touch.

*Ice cream is NOT a solid food to base your diet on.

*Drinking copious amounts of milk WILL make you sick. Without fail. Even if it's Nesquik.

*One day turns into two, which turns into three, and before you know it, it's been a week. Or
two.

*Boys like to NOT shower or do laundry when there's a game or challenge involved.

*Birthdays are easy to forget because you never know the day.

*The guys at New Poblanos LOVE us.

*Boys like to drive fast.

*Challenges are only as big as you believe them to be.

*Sometimes, it takes nearly dying to truly feel alive.

*People will say they'll call and then not. Shrug it off. You're surrounded by great people.

*When God places people into your life, enjoy them as family for as long as they're there.

*Your family are your closest friends.

*Days off SHOULD NOT be spent inside under any circumstance. These are for adventures.

*Church is a get to. Not a have to.

*"You'll only get out of it what you put in it."

And that's all I can think of off the top of my head. But I'll add and revise when I'm home.

Serve

We''ve pretty much learned that I stink at time management, and with that, getting this updated on a regular basis. But here goes:

Serve just ended today. For those of you who don''t know, Serve is a group of 9+ youth groups from the Converge NW (formerly the CBC) with a total of around 200 to 250 people. It was a blast. They rent out a campsite in one of the neighborhoods that we build in often, and pitch up quite a few tents, have an incredible worship team and an even more incredible kitchen staff (they were so awesome!) It was a little different from the rest of the summer in that it was a two day build as opposed to a one day, and that the grupos weren''t living in the dorms.

This summer has been great so far, I can''t believe it''s already halfway gone! If I was supposed to update you and haven''t, just email me and I will.

We have staff retreat this week, kicking off with church in San Diego at Claremont Emmanuel. Yay! Church in English! I get to understand the preaching! I DO love church in Tijuana though. It''s great and SO welcoming! A couple weekends ago, Mark and Carson played at a youth fundraiser event for the Deborah House. Being able to spend the day with the youth from a couple different churches at an event was a blast.

Aside from that, sorry that this is so short, and next time it WILL be sooner!
And for those of you who were wondering, I get back into Portland the evening of the 21st.

Love you all!

Oops

So. Sorry it's been so long. Those last few weeks before I left were super crazy. They included but were not limited to an impromptu trip to Seattle to get my passport, saying LOTS of see you laters, and meeting with the GMT from Hinson.

And then I got down here and our staff computer had a block that didn't allow blogger. Well, it still doesn't, but Josie (a staff member here, I'll get to that) figured out how to make it work. YAY! So... here goes. A month of filling in:

When I got down here there was one other intern and then the administrator (as far as staff go aside from Eddie and Maggi). Andrew Spoelstra (we call him Spo) and Elise. Eddie and Maggi met me at the airport and had waited to eat dinner so that they could take me out to eat so we didn't make it back to the dorms until around 9.
Super overwhelming.
The next day, Tuesday, Megan arrived around two with her friend and former intern Graig. Two people to kick it with while Andrew was working on stuff around the dorms. Tuesday was basically my settling in day, and my driving day, which was super nerve-racking at first. But now I'm more comfortable with driving down here.

From there to here wasn't very eventful. Well, it was, but it's hard to pinpoint it all and not take all day, especially since I've only got a tiny bit of time left until I've got to get to work.

We went to Rosarito our first day off. SUPER fun. I love the beach so much. I learned how to build a house AND went to a Mexican church the weekend before that. The following weekend we took a group camping trip to La Bufa Dora, which was just INCREDIBLE because there are only two blowholes in the entire world.

http://www.google.com.mx/#hl=en&&sa=X&ei=OCUNTO_xJ4T78AbinuSOBw&ved=0CBcQBSgA&q=la+bufadora&spell=1&fp=8caef93a682a8825

It was an incredible experience. We were camping just above the blowhole and scaling mountains like crazy (which is hard to believe if you know me...)

Since then we've just been working around the dorms a lot and then just got done having a 4 day weekend group straight into a week-long group. That was incredible. Such a blast. I can now officially build a house.

Staff orientation starts this afternoon, and I'll try to update more regularly. Promise. Oh right. Staff!

Girls: Megan, Josie, Julia, MollyJo, me and Jess
Boys: Andrew, Mark, Andy, Bart, Sam, Carson, Roman, and Austin
And also Elise, Eddie and Maggi

God bless!
